The Story
Painting outside in the backyard during summer. The coastal colours were calling – sand, ocean, and the dusty green of coastal bushland. I was having fun with texture and speed, everything drying faster in the warmth with the sun hitting the canvas as I worked. A song kept playing on repeat: “Mr Sandman” by Oppidan. It fit the vibe perfectly – dreamy, nostalgic, a bit hazy and matched the palette so well the title wrote itself. This piece has become a favourite and sparked more commissions than almost anything else. You can’t beat this calming yet vibrant colour palette.
The Creation
Acrylic with layered brushwork, built up quickly due to the heat. The turquoise, teal, and sandy yellows blended in places and stayed distinct in others, creating that coastal depth. Cross-hatched strokes in some areas, broader sweeps in others—keeping the energy moving across the canvas. Working outside meant adapting to the conditions. The sun was both a challenge and a collaborator, forcing me to work fast and trust my instincts rather than overthink.
The Piece
Land Of The Sandmen captures that perfect coastal calm – the intersection of ocean, sand, and bush that feels uniquely Australian. It’s vibrant without being overwhelming, bringing energy and serenity in equal measure. This piece resonates especially with coastal clients and anyone drawn to that beachy, laid-back aesthetic. It works beautifully in living rooms, dining areas, and bedrooms, anywhere you want to bring that seaside ease indoors. The palette is timeless, and the texture gives it enough complexity to stay interesting no matter how many times you look at it.
